ELECTRICITY

In 1996 the government allowed ENDESA to take control over two important companies, Sevillana de Electricidad and FECSA (Fuerzas Eléctricas de Cataluña). This merger allowed ENDESA to become the largest firm in the sector.
ENDESA controls several small, regional electricity companies like:

ERZ (Aragón): Eléctricas Reunidas de Zaragoza
ELECTRA DE VIESGO (Cantabria)
SALTOS DEL NANSA (Asturias)
ENHER (Cataluña): Empresa Hidroeléctrica de Ribagorzana
UNELCO (Canarias): Unión Eléctrica de Canarias
GESA (Baleares): Gas y Electricidad

The merger between two private companies IBERDUERO and HIDROLA, led to consolidation of the second largest firm in the sector, IBERDROLA.

ENDESA and IBERDROLA control almost 80% of total available generating capacity and the remaining 20% was divided between two smaller firms – Unión Fenosa and Hidrocantábrico.

SEVILLANA_ENDESA
To be able to pay your electricity bill through your bank (Sevillana-Endesa charge bimonthly), you will have to have a bank account set up and make sure it holds funds to pay the bills presented, or you risk being cut off.

With Sevillana-Endesa you can set up a contract on-line, by phone or by calling in to the nearest Sevillana-Endesa offices.
To view the internet web site go to www.endesaonline.com.
For information by phone, call (national) 902 509 509 (ask for English-speaking call assistant if you do not speak Spanish.

In order to be contracted with Sevillana-Endesa you will need to show following documents:

For a newly built house that has never had an electricity supply before:

  • Boletin de Enganche (connection certificate) - must be supplied by the electrician who installed all electrical wiring, etc.
  • Licencia de Primera ocupación (or Certificado de Habitabilidad) - This is the First Occupation Licence and is obtained from the Town Hall.

Whether for supply to a new building or a property with an existing supply, you will also need:

  • A copy of the last electricity bill pertaining the property
  • Passport or Spanish NIE number
  • If renting, then you will need to give details of the rental contract
  • If you have purchased a property then you will need to provide details from the title deeds
  • In all cases, you will have to give bank account details in order to set up payment of the bimonthly bills on Standing Order.

If you bought new property straight from the developer and you hired a lawyer, usually he can take care of contracting electricity and water as the procedure can seem long and complicated especially if you do not speak Spanish.
