RAILWAYS

Spain has an extensive railway system with a total of 15,988 kilometres of tracks, covering the entire country.

RENFE – (Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles) is the main railway operator in Spain. www.renfe.es

RENFE is the state-run railway company which covers an ample number of lines through the country.

When buying the tickets ask for a discount as there are many options.

Tarjeta Dorada” – (Golden Card) – up to 60% of discount for seniors (over 60 years old), handicap, retired people (over 18 years old).

Días Azules” (Blue Days) – it is possible to travel by train with up to 50% of discount, but cannot be use at peak time such as holiday periods.

Tarjeta Joven” (Youth Card) – for people between the age of 13 and 25 with up to 50% of discount for any type of tickets, provided that the trip will be on “blue days”.

Eurailpass” - Euro-rail pass – It can be purchased in the country of origin and provides unlimited travel on any date, on any line, without supplements. Its price also varies according to duration, which can be 15, 25, 30, 60, or 90 days.

Infantil” – children between 4 and 13 have up to 40% of discount.

Grupos” – groups of 10 to 25 people have up to 15% of discount.

In addition to the regular trains and sleeper cars, RENFE has inaugurated the high speed trains: * AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) with a speed of 300km/h, goes from Madrid to Seville in 2 hours and 15 minutes
* Other high speed train is EUROMED (Barcelona – Valencia – Alicante)
* TALGO 200 (200km/h)

Spain has a road network measuring 317,000 km of which 2,000 are relatively recent motorways.

The shipping company TRANSMEDITERRANEA (state-operated) links the peninsula with the Balearic, Canary Islands and northern Africa.

* from Almería and Málaga to Melilla,
